Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra on Saturday held wide-ranging talks with Bhutanese counterpart Aum Pema Choden and conveyed India’s commitment to a partnership with Bhutan based on the Himalayan nation’s priorities. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Saturday that a top Bhutanese diplomat made an official visit to India from July 28 to 29.

A statement said that the two foreign secretaries reviewed the entire spectrum of bilateral cooperation and discussed ways to further strengthen it in various fields. The two Foreign Secretaries co-chaired the India-Bhutan Development Cooperation Dialogue.

The Foreign Ministry said the Bhutanese Foreign Secretary’s visit reinforced the long-standing tradition of regular high-level exchanges between the two countries to discuss all issues of mutual interest. It further added that the Bhutanese side shared details regarding the 13th Five Year Plan of Bhutan during the talks.

The statement said that Foreign Secretary Kwatra conveyed India’s commitment to pursue a partnership with Bhutan based on the priorities of the Bhutanese government and its people and to take bilateral partnership forward, including in new areas. MEA said both Foreign Secretaries appreciated the progress of bilateral cooperation in energy sector, development partnership, cross-border connectivity, trade and economic ties, digital development, science and technology, skill development and furthering people-to-people ties .

It was also agreed that the two sides would continue to work to further strengthen such cooperation, taking into account the joint statement issued during the official visit of the King of Bhutan to India in April, the statement said. . Choden also met External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Saturday.
