Know in 4 points what is the reason for Manipur violence…

The population of Manipur is about 38 lakhs. There are three major communities here – Meitei, Naga and Kuki. Meiteis are mostly Hindus. Naga-Kuki follow Christianity. Belongs to ST category. Their population is about 50%. The Imphal Valley is dominated by the Meitei community, which covers about 10% of the state’s area. The population of Naga-Kuki is about 34 percent. These people live in about 90% of the state’s area.

How the controversy started: Meitei community demands that they too be given this status

of a tribe. The community filed a petition in the Manipur High Court for this. The community argued that Manipur had merged with India in 1949. Earlier they had only got the status of the tribe. After this, the High Court recommended to the state government that Meitei be included in the Scheduled Tribes (ST).

What is Meitei’s argument: Meitei tribesmen believe that years ago their kings called Kukis from Myanmar to fight wars. After that he became a permanent resident.

The people cut down the forests for employment and started cultivating opium. This has made Manipur a triangle of drug trafficking. All this is happening openly. He formed an arms group to fight the Naga people.

Why are there Naga-Kuki protests: Both the other tribes are against giving reservation to the Meitei community.

They are against. He says that out of 60 assembly seats in the state, 40 seats are already in the Meitei-dominated Imphal Valley. In such a situation, if Meitei gets reservation in ST category, their rights will be divided.

What are the political equations: Out of 60 MLAs of Manipur, 40 MLAs are Meitei and 20 MLAs are from Naga-Kuki tribe. So far only two out of 12 CMs have been from the tribe.

It was the morning of 29th June, we were leaving the hotel for Imphal airport. The phone rang, the call was from Bobby Singh. He was probably going to run away, he said in a gasping voice, ‘The cookie militant has attacked, I am also carrying the gun.’ Then the phone got disconnected.

Saikul town is in Kangpopki district of Manipur. When we reached here on 26 June, local Kuki leaders of the area took us to see the bunkers on the Imphal border. People roaming around with guns hanging on the way kept meeting. Bunkers, guns, fighter planes, everything was exactly like Singda village with Meitei population, where we had gone before coming to Saikul.

‘Kukis have come from outside, they have come from Myanmar and settled here. This land is ours, Meitei people are the original inhabitants of Manipur. Earlier Kuki had 3 MLAs, now there are 10. They are occupying everywhere like this, if not stopped they will do so. ‘ This is to say of Pramod Singh, the leader of the Meitei Lipun organization. This is also being called Meitei nationalism.
