The violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities in Manipur, which started in May, is not taking the name of stopping. So far more than 160 people have died in the clashes. With this, the Assam Rifles along with the army and other paramilitary forces are working without sleep to restore peace in Manipur so that peace can be established in the northeastern state. But for the Assam Rifles, the task of maintaining peace between the two communities is no less challenging in the current situation.

Manipur: Braving these challenges, Assam Rifles jawans are working without sleep to restore peace in Manipur

Assam Rifles officers say army personnel in Manipar often face hostile mobs and sometimes even uncooperative state machinery. The army and other paramilitary forces, along with the Assam Rifles present across Manipur, have been tasked with maintaining peace in the state and pacifying the angry people of both the communities.

Officials said that we have to face criticism as well. None of us have slept for 96 hours and we have opened our camps for displaced people, be it Meitei or Kuki. Everyone caught in the riots knew a safe haven, be it the Assam Rifles or an army camp.

But today both the communities are accusing us of helping the other, while our only job is to ensure that peace is maintained and human life and dignity is respected, the official said. Recently, 31 MLAs demanded replacement of the 9th, 22nd and 37th battalions of the Assam Rifles with other central security forces, citing the need to promote unity in the state.

Nine Assam Rifles personnel have been deployed on the border of Churachandpur and Bishnupur districts of the state, 22 Assam Rifles have been deployed in Kangpokpi area and 37 Assam Rifles have been deployed in Sugnu areas. However, this demand of the legislators has surprised the officers and jawans of these units as the jawans of the force had saved many lives after the violence broke out. After that, these units are helping to establish peace in the ‘buffer zone’ where villages of both ethnic groups are adjacent.

Describing the operations of these units, which are strategically important, the officer said that since May 3, the unit’s personnel had played a key role in saving the lives of many people who fled their homes due to the conflict between the two sides. .
