Most of the fort was made of red sandstone, and Akbar contributed a lot to this. He encouraged architecture with red walls and sandstone. For the construction of the fort, he bought more than 4000 tonnes of premium sandstone from quarries spread across northern India.
Kohinoor was kept here.
After the weakening of Mughal power, Agra Fort was plundered by several dynasties. Shah Jahan’s famous Mayur Singhasan and Kohinoor diamonds were also kept here. But a Persian ruler, Nadir Shah, attacked the fort and looted the throne. After this, the Kohinoor passed from India to Persia and finally to the British.

There are many historical buildings in Agra Fort, like Jahangir Mahal, Khas Mahal, Musamman Burj, Sheesh Mahal, and Nagina Masjid, which attract tourists especially. The most interesting building of the fort, ‘Sheesh Mahal, is also a dressing room, in which small mirrors were decorated in a very beautiful way.
