The situation in violence-hit Manipur may have started improving gradually, but about 88 dead bodies kept in the mortuaries of various hospitals in Manipur have not been identified yet. Most of these are being told dead bodies of tribals. Almost all the dead bodies of non-tribals have been identified by their relatives. Most of the bodies, which are in a state of decomposition, have not yet been identified. However, the responsibility of identifying the dead bodies usually rests with the police.

Manipur: 88 dead bodies kept in various hospitals of the state could not be identified

According to sources, the bodies, which are yet to be identified, have been kept at the mortuary of Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Imphal West district, Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) in Imphal East district and Churachandpur district hospital.

According to sources, about 53 bodies, mostly from the Kuki community, are yet to be identified at the two district hospitals in the valley, RIMS and JNIMS, while around 35 bodies from the Kuki-Zo communities are currently at the district hospital in Churachandpur. According to sources, about 30-35 dead bodies are currently kept in the mortuary of Churachandpur district hospital. Out of these, 3 dead bodies are being told of Meitei.
