What is the history of Mewat?
Mewat is a historically important region located to the south of Delhi, which derives its name from its inhabitants, the Meos. Mewat, the land of Meos, owes its origin to its tribal inhabitants, the Meos tribals. This region has been known as a distinct ethnic and socio-cultural region.

The Meos trace their roots to the early Aryan invasion of northern India and call themselves Kshatriyas. They have largely preserved their social and cultural traits unlike other tribes of the surrounding areas.

During the rule of the Tughlaq dynasty in the 14th century AD, these people converted to Islam but till date, they have retained their age-old distinct ethno-cultural identity. This is the reason that even the dress of the Muslims here is different from the common Muslims. Local Muslim names are still like Hindu names. Neeraj Khan, who was killed in the violence, belonged to a Muslim family. His father’s name is Chiranji Lal and uncle’s name is Latur Khan. Not only this, his brother’s name is Sunil. Historically, this region has been extremely turbulent and has been a victim of repeated invasions and plunders throughout the post-Vedic period.
