Separately on Friday, US Central Command said four US military personnel were injured in an explosion during a raid. While the senior ISIS (ISIS) leader of Syria died. The Observatory, which relies on an extensive network of ground sources in Syria, said a similar attack had killed sixteen people, mostly civilians, on Saturday. The Observatory said dozens of other people were abducted in the attack, of whom 25 had been released, but the others remained untraced.
ISIS once again controlled vast swaths of Syria, losing ground in separate offensives by US-backed fighters, Russian-backed government forces, regional militants and Turkish rebels. Since then, most of the ISIS terrorists were hiding in the desert. They have since used such bases to ambush Kurdish-led forces and Syrian government troops, while continuing to mount attacks in neighboring Iraq.
The UN has said that despite setbacks, the jihadist group has “maintained its ability to launch attacks at a steady pace.” The UN estimates that ISIS has between 6,000 and 10,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria. These take advantage of the porous border between the two countries and concentrate primarily in rural areas.
