Chris Hipkins is all set to replace Jacinda Ardern as New Zealand’s next prime minister after emerging as the sole candidate to lead the Labor Party. The Labor Party said on Saturday that Chris Hipkins’ name is expected to be confirmed as the new leader at a meeting of the Labor Party’s 64 MPs or caucus on Sunday.While surprising everyone on Thursday, in one of her announcements, the current PM Jacinda Ardern said that she will leave the post of PM of the country and will not contest elections again.
On Friday, local media organization Research Horizon Research poll showed that 26 per cent of people want to see Hipkins as prime minister.
Chris Hipkins was first elected as a Labor MP in 2008. Hipkins, 44, became popular in November 2020 after she was appointed minister for COVID-19. He currently holds the portfolios of Police, Public Service and Education. In addition, Hipkins is also serving as the Leader of the House.
The term of the Labor Party of New Zealand will end this year. There are elections in the country on 14 October. Meanwhile, Hipkins has got the responsibility of the country. Chris Hipkins will have to work hard to bring the Labor Party to power. A Taxpayers Union-Curia poll prior to Ardern’s resignation announcement showed a fall in the Labor Party’s popularity to 31.7%, while the opposition New Zealand National Party was supported by 37.2% of respondents.
Earlier, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern had announced her resignation. She had said that she would resign in early February. Ardern said that I will not contest the election, but I know that the issues affecting the people of New Zealand will be in the focus of the government this year and until the election. He is confident that the Labor Party will form the government in the upcoming election.
