India has shown generosity in the appeal of Prime Minister of Pakistan Shehbaz Sharif for talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is struggling with poverty. On Wednesday, India invited Pakistan to participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) foreign ministers’ meeting amid continuous appeals from Pakistan to improve relations. This meeting of SCO will be held in Goa on 4-5 May.
Foreign Minister S Jaishankar has sent an invitation through the Indian High Commission in Islamabad to Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari to come to India for the SCO meeting. It has not yet been confirmed from the Pakistan side whether Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto will participate in this meeting or not.
According to the Pakistani newspaper Express Tribune, China and Russia are present in the SCO and considering the importance of this forum, there is little possibility of Pakistan keeping its distance from this meeting. The world is surprised to see the generosity of India. Interestingly, if Pakistan accepts the invitation, it would be the first such visit in nearly 12 years. Hina Rabbani Khar was the last Pakistani Foreign Minister to visit India in July 2011.
Apart from India and Pakistan, SCO members also include China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. A similar invitation has also been sent to the foreign ministers of China and Russia along with Central Asian countries. But considering the level of bilateral relations between India and Pakistan, the invitation to the Foreign Minister of Pakistan is significant in many ways.
Pakistan surrounded by the economic crisis was constantly being appealed to start talks with India. Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif while talking to a TV channel said that Pakistan has learned lessons from three wars and wants to live in peace with India.
Let us tell you that in the last eight years, the relations between India and Pakistan have deteriorated. In August 2015, India extended an invitation to Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Sartaj Aziz, but the visit was canceled after the then External Affairs Minister late Sushma Swaraj asked Aziz to refrain from meeting the Hurriyat in India. The last Indian External Affairs Minister to visit Pakistan was Sushma Swaraj. In December 2015, Swaraj went to Pakistan to attend Islamabad’s Heart of Asia conference. The relations between the two countries further deteriorated after the terrorist attacks in Pathankot (January 2016), Uri (September 2016), and Pulwama (February 2019).
In August 2019, India passed a resolution to abrogate Article 370 from the state of Jammu and Kashmir and bifurcate the state into two union territories: Jammu and Kashmir Ladakh. After this, Pakistan stopped the bus and train services, ending diplomatic relations with India.
