On Tuesday, 81-year-old Asaram was sentenced to life imprisonment for raping a Surat woman. Gujarat’s Gandhinagar sessions court convicted Asaram on Monday. Earlier, on April 25, 2018, the Jodhpur court had sentenced Asaram to life imprisonment for raping a minor in UP. Asaram’s production took place through video conferencing.
In this case, there were six other accused including Asaram’s wife. Court held Asaram guilty. One of the accused died during the trial. The court acquitted the remaining five accused due to lack of evidence.
Let us tell that the court had found Asaram Bapu guilty under sections 376, 377, 354, 342, 357 and 506 (2). The court has sentenced life imprisonment under sections 376 (rape), 377 (unnatural sex). Apart from this, one year’s sentence in section 354 (offence of rape by spiritual teacher or teacher), section 342 (wrongful confinement) 6 months’ sentence and 357 (use of force for illegal confinement and assault) One year and sentenced to one year in 506(2) intimidation. Public Prosecutor RC Kodekar said that the court has ordered the victim to pay an ex-gratia of Rs 50,000.
In 2013, two sisters from Surat filed a rape complaint against Narayan Sai and his father Asaram. The younger sister of both has said in the complaint that Narayan Sai repeatedly raped her between 2002 and 2005. According to the girl, she was raped when she was staying at Asaram’s ashram in Surat. So the elder sister has accused Asaram of rape in her complaint.According to him, between 1997 and 2006, he lived in Asaram’s ashram in Ahmedabad. During this, Asaram raped her several times. Both sisters have given separate Tahrir against father and son.
