In 2022, the Chinese population have shrunk by 850,000 people. In China, approximately 1.04 crore people died in the previous year. During the same period, however, there were 95.6 lakh new births. The National Bureau of Statistics of China released this information on Tuesday.
For the first time in over 60 years, China’s population has declined. Meanwhile, the country’s health authorities have acknowledged that approximately 60,000 people died of Covid-19 in Chinese hospitals between December 8, 2022, and January 12, 2023.
According to economic experts, China’s declining population trend may prove to be a curse in the long run. As fewer children are born and more people reach retirement age in China, the country will run out of manpower to keep its economy humming.
Cautioned by it, China has begun to take steps to combat the declining birth rate. After 35 years, the strict one-child policy was lifted in 2016, allowing families to have two children. Now Couples are allowed to have three children since 2021. Beijing has even begun to offer cash handouts, tax breaks, and even property concessions to couples who choose to have more than one child.
